Intumescent strips or fire door strips are fitted to the door and when exposed to extreme heat expand to close any edges or gaps that may leave the fire door vulnerable to fire and smoke spread intumescent door strips are usually designed to provide up to 30 or 60 minutes fire resistance and help to contain the fire in one area and prevent it spreading.
Intumescent strips are available in fire only brush and bladed options in both graphite and sodium silicate carrying comprehensive 30 60 and 90 minute test evidence with many door core manufacturers.
This strip is usually placed around door frames.
The first two systems incorporate exposed intumescent strips to the frame jambs and head as standard whereas the concealed method houses the intumescent strips behind vertical door lippings but exposed on top this provides 30 minutes fire resistance only.
Once a fire breaks out in a room the heat causes the strip to expand and seal the gap around the frame in order to contain the fire giving you enough time to escape and call.
Suitable for single and double leaf fire rated timber doorsets all intumescent strips are tested to bs 476 22 with smoke seals also tested to bs 476 31 1.
The easiest and most accurate way to rout the correct sized groove for intumescent strip is to use a router cutter designed specifically for the purpose.
