To prevent the relatively thin panels from buckling observe these fitting and nailing rules.

Measure and cut panel in the same manner detailed in step 14 but cut lower portion instead of top.
The siding slides behind vinyl siding trim pieces that hide the gap and the cut end.
Vinyl siding installation is designed to hang loosely on the sheathing so that it can expand and contract with temperature changes.
Vinyl siding depends on a few special trim pieces that either hold everything together or hide the edges and ends of the panels.
When you get to a window you will need to cut sections from the panels directly above and below it to fit.

To get the depth of the notch measure the distance from the locking tab on the siding below to the undersill trim.
Measure and cut panel to fit.
Be sure to check both sides for proper fit.
This will leave a panel with an intact nail hem and proper exposure.
Place the siding that has to be notched under the window.
To install the siding if partial panels are required mark the line to cut by measuring from the edge of the lock of the panel and cut the panel to the proper width.
Measure the width of the piece you need to cut by holding the length of siding against the window and marking the edge points on the panel with a pencil.
Install siding at the top of a window or door in a similar fashion but this time set the siding on the window channel and use the window trim to mark the cut.
Mark the siding at 1 4 inch past the edge of each.

When installing vinyl siding on each side of a window or door start on the side that needs the longer panels.
When you mark each side add a inch to the width to allow for expansion.
Longer siding panels don t stretch as readily as smaller ones so they re not as easy to adjust if they get out of whack.
Drop siding panel into j channel around top of window and install.
