Now you can install the new drain. Install the new tub drain fitting. After removing the old stopper take out the old drain flange or the housing that connects the tub and drain to the pipe below. Use a similar procedure to adjust the linkage for a tub with a drain stopper.

If you are installing a flip lever drain stopper insert the plunger into the overflow drain first screw in the drain basket and then screw on the drain s faceplate. Cover the underside of the new flange with plumbers putty then twist it into the drain opening. Using the tub wrench will make it easier to get the drain correctly into the hole. Whether you re fixing a faulty drain or upgrading your hardware installing a new drain is a fairly straightforward job.

Use the putty knife to remove excess plumber s putty. In a clockwise direction take the drain and position it in the hole. The stopper should fall and seal the drain. Apply a generous band of plumber s putty to the bottom of the flange on the new fitting.

Screw the new drain basket in by hand and tighten it with the pliers or drain wrench. Remove the tub stopper from the new drain fitting. If your tub begins to drain slowly or stops draining completely it has probably. A good way to avoid cross threading is to start tightening by hand first.

Install the linkage screw on the cover plate and lower the lever. Insert the fitting into the bathtub drain opening making sure to center it.
